What's in a name?
Dr. Mia de los Reyes (Stanford University)
In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer financed by the Spanish monarchy, began the first journey to circumnavigate the globe. He did not personally complete the journey, and along the way, he killed and enslaved people from multiple different Indigenous communities—and yet his name lives on, particularly in astronomy: in galaxies, in spacecraft, and in some of the largest telescopes in the world. In this talk, I’ll discuss some of the Indigenous communities Magellan encountered (and enslaved and killed) and their astronomical traditions.
